Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-53949 is an improper authorization vulnerability in Apache Superset that occurs when the FAB_ADD_SECURITY_API feature is enabled. This feature, disabled by default, inadvertently permits users with lower privileges to create new roles through the API, potentially escalating their permissions. The vulnerability affects Apache Superset versions starting from 2.0.0 up to before 4.1.1. The issue is fixed in version 4.1.0.

Potential Impact

Lower privilege users can exploit this vulnerability to create roles, which may lead to unauthorized privilege escalation within Apache Superset environments where FAB_ADD_SECURITY_API is enabled. This could undermine access controls and security policies.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Superset to version 4.1.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Since the vulnerability only manifests when FAB_ADD_SECURITY_API is enabled (disabled by default), disabling this feature can also mitigate risk if upgrading is not immediately possible.
