VulnerabilityCVE-2026-44293cvecve-2026-44293cwe-94
Published: 05/13/2026 (05/13/2026, 14:43:33 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: protobufjs
Product: protobuf.js

Description

protobufjs compiles protobuf definitions into JavaScript (JS) functions. Prior to 7.5.6 and 8.0.2, protobufjs generated JavaScript for toObject conversion could include an unsafe expression derived from a schema-controlled bytes field default value. A crafted descriptor with a non-string default value for a bytes field could cause attacker-controlled code to be emitted into the generated conversion function. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.6 and 8.0.2.

Technical Analysis

The protobufjs library compiles protobuf definitions into JavaScript functions. In versions before 7.5.6 and 8.0.2, the generated JavaScript for toObject conversion could include unsafe expressions derived from schema-controlled bytes field default values. Specifically, a crafted protobuf descriptor with a non-string default value for a bytes field could lead to arbitrary code injection by causing attacker-controlled code to be emitted into the generated conversion function. This vulnerability is identified as CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code) and has a CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.7, indicating high severity. The vulnerability is fixed in protobufjs versions 7.5.6 and 8.0.2. Red Hat advisories confirm the issue and provide updates for affected products.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can supply a crafted protobuf descriptor with a non-string default value for a bytes field can cause arbitrary JavaScript code execution within the context of the protobuf.js toObject conversion function. This can lead to high impact including code execution with privileges of the running process. The vulnerability affects protobuf.js users who process untrusted protobuf descriptors and use affected versions prior to 7.5.6.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade protobuf.js to version 7.5.6 or later, or 8.0.2 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Red Hat provides security advisories and patches for affected products incorporating protobuf.js. No alternative mitigations are documented; applying the official fix is required to remediate this vulnerability.
