Published: 09/17/2026 (09/17/2026, 17:11:39 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: brufdev
Product: many-notes

Description

Many Notes is a Markdown note-taking web application designed for simplicity. Prior to 0.16.0, the ZIP vault import implemented in app/Actions/ProcessImportedVault.php accepts archive filenames containing parent-directory traversal segments. An authenticated user can write arbitrary files outside the importing user's vault and into other users' vaults, including overwriting existing files. Disguised SVG content can be placed in another user's vault and execute stored cross-site scripting when the victim opens that vault. This issue is fixed in version 0.16.0.

Technical Analysis

The many-notes application before version 0.16.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in the ZIP vault import functionality implemented in app/Actions/ProcessImportedVault.php. This flaw allows an authenticated user to craft archive filenames with parent-directory traversal segments, enabling arbitrary file writes outside the user's vault and into other users' vaults. As a result, attackers can overwrite files or inject disguised SVG files that execute stored cross-site scripting (XSS) upon vault access by victims. The issue is resolved in version 0.16.0.

Potential Impact

An authenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to write arbitrary files outside their own vault, including into other users' vaults. This can lead to overwriting existing files and injecting malicious SVG content that triggers stored cross-site scripting attacks when other users open their vaults. The vulnerability compromises confidentiality and integrity with high impact, but does not affect availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade many-notes to version 0.16.0 or later, where this path traversal vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is required as the issue is resolved in the official update.
