Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-76553 is an external control of file name or path vulnerability (CWE-73) in the WP Import Export Lite WordPress plugin prior to version 3.9.33. The plugin fails to validate a path derived from stored user-supplied data before performing recursive deletion. This enables users who have been delegated the plugin capability by an administrator to delete arbitrary directories and their contents, potentially including sensitive files outside the web root directory.

Potential Impact

An attacker with delegated WP Import Export Lite plugin capabilities can delete arbitrary directories and all files within them on the affected system. This can lead to loss of data and potential disruption of website functionality. The vulnerability affects file system integrity but does not directly indicate remote code execution or privilege escalation beyond the delegated capability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the WP Import Export Lite plugin to version 3.9.33 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Until patched, restrict the delegation of WP Import Export Lite plugin capabilities to trusted users only. No official patch link is provided in the input, so verify the availability of the fix from the plugin vendor or WordPress plugin repository.
