Description

FreeRDP contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the H.264 YUV-to-RGB conversion process caused by a mismatch between decoder and surface dimensions. This flaw can lead to sensitive information disclosure, application crashes resulting in denial of service, or potentially arbitrary code execution. Multiple affected versions exist across various Ubuntu releases. A patch is available and should be applied via standard system updates.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-55192 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in FreeRDP's H.264 YUV-to-RGB conversion due to a decoder and surface dimension mismatch. This vulnerability allows an attacker to potentially read memory beyond intended bounds, which can result in information leakage, application crashes, or arbitrary code execution. The issue affects numerous specific FreeRDP package versions across multiple Ubuntu LTS and standard releases. The vulnerability has been addressed in newer upstream releases, and Ubuntu has issued security updates to fix it.

Potential Impact

An attacker exploiting this vulnerability could obtain sensitive information from memory, cause FreeRDP to crash leading to denial of service, or execute arbitrary code. The vulnerability affects client-side RDP software, potentially impacting confidentiality, availability, and integrity of affected systems.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available. Users should update FreeRDP packages to the versions provided in the Ubuntu security advisory USN-8561-1. Applying standard system updates on affected Ubuntu releases will install the patched versions and mitigate the vulnerability.
