A fix is available and has been released in PyJWT version 2.14.0 and corresponding Ubuntu package updates. Users should update to the fixed versions as listed in the Ubuntu security notices (USN-8916-1 and USN-8916-2) to remediate this vulnerability. Standard system updates or applying the Ubuntu Pro fixes will address the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official patches.
Description
PyJWT versions from 2.13.0 up to but not including 2.14.0 contain a vulnerability in the HMACAlgorithm.prepare_key function. The issue arises because the HMAC key guard only recognizes top-level public JWK forms and fails to detect container representations. This flaw allows an attacker who knows the public key to forge authentication tokens by passing a public JWK container as the HMAC secret. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2.14.0.
