AI-suggested
A fix is available and users should update PyJWT to version 2.14.0 or later. Ubuntu users should apply the security updates provided in the Ubuntu security notices USN-8916-1 and USN-8916-2, which include fixed package versions for multiple Ubuntu releases. Standard system updates will apply the necessary patches. No additional mitigations are required beyond applying these updates.
Description
PyJWT versions from 2.13.0 up to but not including 2.14.0 contain a vulnerability in the HMACAlgorithm.prepare_key function where raw-JWK keys prefixed with a UTF-8 byte-order mark are not normalized before JSON detection. This causes the public JWK to bypass asymmetric-key detection and be treated as an HMAC secret, allowing an attacker who knows the public key to forge authenticated tokens. The issue is fixed in version 2.14.0.
