AI-suggested

A fix is available in GitPython version 1.2.0.post0_16. Users should upgrade to this version or later to prevent environment variable expansion from attacker-controlled submodule names. Until upgraded, avoid cloning untrusted repositories with submodules or disable debug-level logging to reduce exposure of leaked values in logs.

Description

GitPython versions from 0.1.0 up to but not including 1.2.0.post0_16 contain a vulnerability in the handling of the separate_git_dir parameter during repository cloning. This flaw allows environment variable expansion from attacker-controlled .gitmodules submodule names, leading to leakage of environment variable values as directory names on disk and in debug logs. The vulnerability is fixed in version 1.2.0.post0_16.
