AI-suggested

A fix is available in GitPython version 1.2.0.post0_16. Users and downstream services should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. Since the issue requires an explicit call to Submodule.move(), applications should review their usage of this API and avoid calling it on paths that may include attacker-controlled symlinks. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.

Description

GitPython's Submodule.move() API does not properly handle symbolic links in intermediate path components, allowing an attacker-controlled symlink in a cloned repository to redirect a submodule move operation outside the parent repository's worktree. This causes the submodule checkout to be moved to an attacker-selected directory outside the expected location, corrupting the parent repository's index and configuration. The issue affects GitPython versions before 1.2.0.post0_16 and requires the application to explicitly call Submodule.move() on a path under the symlink. No code execution or confidentiality impact is demonstrated.
