Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-4901 is a stored XSS vulnerability in GitLab CE/EE. It affects all versions starting from 16.9 prior to 16.11.5, from 17.0 prior to 17.0.3, and from 17.1 prior to 17.1.1. The issue occurs because input from commit notes imported into a project is not properly neutralized during web page generation, enabling attackers to inject malicious scripts that persist and execute in users' browsers.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of the victim's browser session when viewing affected project pages. This could lead to session hijacking, defacement, or other malicious actions within the scope of the user's permissions. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade GitLab to versions 16.11.5 or later, 17.0.3 or later, or 17.1.1 or later to remediate this issue. Applying these official fixes will prevent exploitation of the stored XSS vulnerability.
