Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-4278 is an information disclosure vulnerability in GitLab EE where a maintainer user can retrieve the Dependency Proxy password by modifying a particular Dependency Proxy configuration setting. The flaw affects versions >=16.5.0 <17.2.8, >=17.3.0 <17.3.4, and >=17.4.0 <17.4.1. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive credentials within the GitLab environment. The vulnerability has been fixed in versions 17.2.8, 17.3.4, and 17.4.1.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows a maintainer-level user to disclose the Dependency Proxy password, potentially exposing sensitive credentials that could be used to access or manipulate dependencies. This could lead to further compromise within the affected GitLab instance if the credentials are misused. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading affected GitLab EE instances to versions 17.2.8, 17.3.4, or 17.4.1 or later. Applying these updates will remediate the information disclosure issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
