The China-nexus threat group Longlegs continues to deploy Warlock ransomware by exploiting Microsoft SharePoint vulnerabilities, particularly the ToolShell exploit chain. Over the past two months, the group targeted at least four organizations including water utilities, telecommunications providers, government bodies, and universities in Portuguese and Spanish-speaking countries across Europe, Africa, and Latin America. The attackers exploit SharePoint flaws for initial access, use DLL sideloading techniques, abuse vulnerable signed drivers like K7RKScan to disable security software, and leverage Visual Studio Code tunneling for covert remote access. They deploy ransomware at scale by staging payloads in domain SYSVOL shares for rapid network-wide distribution, successfully compromising over 40 hosts in some incidents. 0 On August 31, 2026, threat actors exploited two zero-day vulnerabilities in PaperCut MF affecting a customer in the Education sector. The attackers targeted an internet-facing print server running vulnerable PaperCut MF version 24.0.2, deploying an in-memory Java loader that established a web shell. Through this web shell, they delivered a trojanized Microsoft Copilot binary containing an AdaptixC2 implant. The implant connected to command-and-control infrastructure hosted on Alibaba servers. After remaining dormant for approximately one day, attackers returned to perform reconnaissance and Active Directory enumeration. They then stole a token from a domain-privileged service account and moved laterally to a domain controller. On the compromised domain controller, they dumped credentials from memory and registry, enabled Windows Restricted Admin mode for pass-the-hash attacks, and extracted the NTDS.dit database containing password hashes for all domain accounts, achieving complete domain compromise. Cisco Talos is tracking active exploitation of two vulnerabilities in Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) Software. CVE-2026-20079 is a critical authentication bypass vulnerability allowing remote attackers to execute scripts and obtain root access. CVE-2026-20316 enables remote login using low-privileged accounts and can be chained with other vulnerabilities for privilege escalation. Three distinct threat actor clusters have been identified conducting post-compromise activities: UAT-12197 deployed web shells and credential theft tools; UAT-11823, overlapping with Russian APT Sandworm, deployed Cyclops Blink malware and established reverse shells; UAT-11988, a Qilin ransomware operator, conducted extensive reconnaissance, credential harvesting, and deployed ransomware after establishing persistent network access through tunneling tools. Customers are strongly advised to apply available hotfixes immediately. Join the discussion | CVE Database V5 | 09/09/2026, 20:31:35 UTC Added: 09/25/2025, 16:14:56 UTC |
A resurgence in Node.js abuse has been observed since February 2026, targeting government departments, technology companies, and hotels. Attackers leverage the legitimate, signed node.exe binary to execute malicious JavaScript payloads, evading signature-based detection. In one intrusion at an Asian technology company, attackers downloaded the official Node.js installer after repeated payload blocks and used it to run an implant communicating with Ethereum blockchain gateways via EtherHiding techniques. The same threat actors compromised a U.S. fintech firm, deploying the Rust-based C2Looper backdoor linked to ransomware operations. Multiple attacks involved ModeloRAT, associated with initial access broker Woodgnat, connected to ransomware families including Qilin, Interlock, Rhysida, Akira, 8Base, Black Basta, and Embargo. Attackers employ ClickFix techniques for initial access and combine living-off-the-land tools with commodity malware. Microsoft Threat Intelligence observed a sophisticated human-operated campaign exploiting Microsoft Teams external collaboration features to impersonate IT helpdesk personnel. Attackers socially engineer users into granting remote access via legitimate remote monitoring tools. Once established, they deploy malicious MSI packages through PowerShell, staging a portable Node.js runtime and obfuscated JavaScript implant for persistent command execution. The campaign progresses through extensive Active Directory reconnaissance, periodic screenshot captures, and lateral movement via Windows Remote Management toward high-value infrastructure including domain controllers. Unlike commodity phishing operations, this hands-on-keyboard intrusion leverages legitimate tooling throughout, blending malicious activity into normal enterprise operations. The reconnaissance patterns and targeting of identity systems indicate precursor activity consistent with data theft, extortion, or ransomware deployment objectives. The TerminalFix campaign is a sophisticated multi-stage intrusion targeting organizations via compromised websites that display fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA overlays. Victims are tricked into executing malicious PowerShell commands that download and execute a signed legitimate binary alongside a malicious DLL for sideloading. This leads to steganographic payload extraction, extensive Active Directory reconnaissance, and deployment of a Python-based reverse-tunnel implant providing persistent network-level proxy access. The campaign enables attackers to pivot within the network, conduct domain enumeration, and maintain stealthy persistent access. Although no direct downstream actions were observed, the access gained could facilitate privilege escalation, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment. The campaign combines advanced evasion techniques and persistent network access, posing a serious threat to enterprise environments. Multiple ClickFix malware campaigns have been identified using three delivery methods: MSI packages with DLL sideloading, NodeJS-executed JavaScript, and Python 3.5 payload execution. These campaigns use aggressive social engineering, including phone calls directing victims to compromised WordPress sites. Post-compromise activities include extensive system discovery and Active Directory enumeration. The campaigns share infrastructure and tactics linked to the Lorem Ipsum malware family and Vanilla Tempest adversary, with potential ransomware deployment as a final goal. SynkLoader is a sophisticated modular malware loader that uses multiple programming languages to evade detection. It begins with a Microsoft Teams phishing attack impersonating IT helpdesk staff to trick victims into installing a fake PowerShell cleaner via an MSI installer. The malware operates in memory, using Python, C#, C++, and PowerShell components to profile systems, maintain persistence through scheduled tasks, and deploy a fake Windows lock screen to phish credentials. Additional modules provide reverse proxy capabilities for network tunneling, remote shell, and VNC access, enabling attackers to move laterally and perform hands-on-keyboard operations. The complexity and multi-stage infection chain indicate potential use for ransomware or initial access brokering. An Akira ransomware affiliate gained initial access through an exposed SonicWall VPN without multi-factor authentication via credential spraying. After compromising the domain controller, the attacker performed Active Directory enumeration, collected and exfiltrated data using WinRAR and s5cmd to cloud storage. The affiliate employed a novel evasion technique by rebooting the victim host into Safe Mode with Networking to disable EDR and antivirus protection. AnyDesk was installed as a persistent remote access mechanism. However, the Safe Mode environment caused the ransomware to fail due to out-of-virtual-memory errors, preventing encryption. Despite the encryption failure, the attacker had already exfiltrated credentials and file shares, enabling extortion through data leak threats. This marks the first observed instance of Akira affiliates using Safe Mode boot as an anti-EDR technique. 0 Arctic Wolf Labs has been tracking multiple campaigns built around CastleLoader, a multi-stage shellcode loader that has evolved significantly. Three distinct campaigns were identified: Urutyka, Garrigin, and Noidret. The most significant development is the integration of NeedleStealer framework payloads, marking the first observed use of Rust and Golang tooling in this campaign cluster. NeedleStealer includes a Rust-based desktop cryptocurrency wallet spoofer targeting Ledger, Trezor, and Exodus wallets, and a Golang-based malicious browser extension installer. The campaigns utilize obfuscated PowerShell stagers, IronPython runtimes, and NodeJS-based shellcode injectors. Infrastructure analysis revealed consistent naming patterns, staged domains for future operations, and the use of fraudulently obtained code-signing certificates. The campaigns consistently deploy NetSupport RAT and CastleStealer alongside the new NeedleStealer payloads, suggesting an expansion toward high-value cryptocurrency targeting.
