Description

A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in the media plugin of TinyMCE. Attackers can inject malicious scripts via crafted data-mce-* attributes, which execute when the content is rendered. This affects users of TinyMCE with the media plugin enabled. The vulnerability has been patched in TinyMCE versions 8.5.1, 7.9.3, and 5.11.1 LTS. No official workaround is available other than upgrading to a fixed version.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-47761) is a stored XSS in the TinyMCE media plugin caused by improper sanitization of content containing data-mce-object and data-mce-p-* attributes. When maliciously crafted content is rendered, injected scripts execute in the context of the user. The issue affects TinyMCE versions <=5.10.9, >=6.0.0 <7.9.3, and >=8.0.0 <8.5.1. The vendor fixed the vulnerability by properly sanitizing these attributes in versions 8.5.1, 7.9.3, and 5.11.1 LTS. No workaround is provided other than upgrading.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of the affected application, potentially leading to account compromise, data theft, or other malicious actions impacting confidentiality and integrity. Availability is not affected. The vulnerability requires user interaction (UI:R) and low privileges (PR:L), but has network attack vector (AV:N) and low attack complexity (AC:L).

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade TinyMCE to version 8.5.1 or higher, 7.9.3 or higher, or 5.11.1 LTS or higher. No official workaround is available. Applying the vendor-provided patches is the only recommended remediation.
