node-tar is a tar archive manipulation library for Node.js. Prior to 7.5.21, node-tar's filesFilter in src/list.ts uses the recursive mapHas helper to walk an archive entry path upward with path.dirname() and no segment cap when tar.t(...) or tar.x(...) receives a non-empty member-selection list. A crafted GNU L or PAX x long-path header with thousands of slash-separated segments reaches this.filter(entry.path, entry) in Parser[CONSUMEHEADER] in src/parse.ts before Unpack[CHECKPATH] applies maxDepth, causing an uncatchable RangeError stack overflow that terminates asynchronous and streaming Node.js consumers. This issue is fixed in version 7.5.21.
HAPI FHIR is a complete implementation of the HL7 FHIR standard for healthcare interoperability in Java. Prior to 6.9.11, XhtmlParser.java imposes no maximum element nesting depth, so a deeply nested text.div narrative triggers unbounded recursion between parseElementInner() and parseElement(), raising a StackOverflowError. An attacker who can submit FHIR resources containing such narratives can thus crash a parsing or validation worker thread, affecting validator services and any application that parses attacker-supplied FHIR JSON or XML. This issue is fixed in version 6.9.11.
HAPI FHIR is a complete implementation of the HL7 FHIR standard for healthcare interoperability in Java. Prior to 6.9.11, the JSON utility parser in org.hl7.fhir.utilities.json.parser.JsonParser enforces no maximum nesting depth for arrays or objects. As a result, a small but deeply nested, syntactically valid FHIR JSON document can trigger unbounded readArray() or readObject() recursion, raising a StackOverflowError before structural validation runs. An attacker who can submit JSON resources for validation can thus crash the request thread, and services that do not isolate StackOverflowError safely may experience worker loss or process instability — a denial-of-service condition. This issue is fixed in version 6.9.11.
CVE-2026-32327 is a critical vulnerability in Apache Portable Runtime Utility (APR-util) versions 1.6.3 and earlier. It involves uncontrolled recursion in the apr_xml_quote_elem() function, which can be triggered by parsing XML from untrusted sources. This flaw allows a stack recursion attack that can cause denial of service. The issue is fixed in version 1.6.4.
CVE-2026-15996 is a denial of service vulnerability in GitHub Enterprise Server that allows unauthenticated attackers to cause excessive CPU usage and exhaust request-handling workers by sending crafted HTTP POST requests with deeply nested parameters. This affects all versions prior to 3.21 and was fixed in versions 3.20.3, 3.19.7, 3.18.10, and 3.17.16.
A pre-authentication attacker could leverage type nesting to cause a StackOverflowError potentially leading to denial of service.
This issue affects Apache Qpid ProtonJ2: through 1.1.0.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.2.0, which fixes the issue.
** UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED ** Uncontrolled Recursion vulnerability in Apache Lucy.
This issue affects Apache Lucy: all versions.
As this project is retired, we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to find an alternative or restrict access to the instance to trusted users.
NOTE: This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the ASF. Lucy is now maintained outside of the ASF at https://github.com/lucysearch

A pre-authentication attacker could leverage type nesting to cause a StackOverflowError potentially leading to denial of service.
This issue affects Apache Qpid Proton-J: through 0.34.1.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 0.35.0, which fixes the issue.
An issue was discovered in Django 6.0 before 6.0.9 and 5.2 before 5.2.18.
GeoDjango's `django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry` is subject to a potential denial-of-service when parsing deeply nested `GEOMETRYCOLLECTION` objects supplied as well-known text (WKT), well-known binary (WKB), or hex-encoded WKB, which triggers unbounded recursion and a segmentation fault in the underlying GEOS library. Spatial field lookups and the `django.contrib.gis.forms.GeometryField` form field are also affected.
Earlier, unsupported Django series (such as 5.1.x, 5.0.x, and 4.2.x) were not evaluated and may also be affected.
Django would like to thank Andrew MacPherson and kimchunbok_ for reporting this issue.
Misskey is an open source, federated social media platform. IVersions 8.63.0 and later, but prior to 2026.5.4, contain a vulnerability that can cause the Misskey web client to slow down or crash when it applies a malformed theme. This issue has been fixed in version 2026.5.4.
CVE-2026-13506 is a high severity vulnerability in Bouncy Castle for Java (BC-JAVA) involving uncontrolled recursion due to a Lazy ASN.1 sequence forcing that resets the nesting-depth guard. This affects versions before 1.85 and certain LTS and FIPS versions prior to specified fixed releases. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7, indicating a significant impact if exploited. No official patch or remediation level is currently confirmed from the vendor advisory. No known exploits are reported in the wild.
CVE-2026-59645 is a high-severity vulnerability in Bouncy Castle for Java (BC-JAVA) affecting versions before 1.85 and certain LTS and FIPS versions. The issue involves the OER parser performing uncontrolled recursion without a depth limit on a self-referential IEEE 1609.2 schema, potentially leading to resource exhaustion or denial of service.
Uncontrolled recursion in the unknown-key skip path of the aws-smithy-json runtime crate before 0.62.7, which the smithy-rs code generator invokes from every generated struct deserializer, might allow remote unauthenticated users to cause a denial of service (process abort via stack exhaustion) via a single small HTTP request containing deeply nested JSON to a smithy-rs generated server.
To remediate this issue, users should upgrade to aws-smithy-json 0.62.7 or later and rebuild.
The Apache Traffic Server ESI plugin can recurse without bound and fetch attacker-controlled URLs.
This issue affects Apache Traffic Server: from 8.0.0 through 8.1.11, from 9.0.0 through 9.2.14, from 10.0.0 through 10.1.3.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 9.2.15 or 10.1.4, which fix the issue.
IBM WebSphere Application Server - Liberty versions 17.0.0.3 through 26.0.0.8 have a denial of service vulnerability related to uncontrolled recursion when the restConnector-2.0 feature is enabled. This vulnerability can cause service disruption without requiring user interaction and can be exploited remotely with low complexity. The vulnerability is identified as CWE-674 and has a CVSS v3.1 score of 7.1, indicating high severity.
The Erlang/OTP ssl application does not detect cycles when reconstructing an incomplete peer certificate chain during a TLS or DTLS handshake. In ssl_certificate:handle_incomplete_chain/5, the received chain is passed to ssl_certificate:build_certificate_chain/5, which walks issuer relationships via ssl_certificate:do_certificate_chain/7 with no cycle detection and no depth limit. When the peer supplies two mutually cross-signed certificates in unordered form (A issues B, B issues A), the issuer lookup alternates between the two certificates and the pair of functions recurses indefinitely, growing the call stack and chain accumulator without bound. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a crafted certificate chain in a TLS or DTLS Certificate handshake message to exhaust available memory and crash the BEAM node. Only a TCP connection and a partial handshake are required; no authentication or completed handshake is needed, and both TLS/DTLS servers and clients are affected when processing peer certificate messages. This issue affects OTP from OTP 23.2 before OTP 29.0.4, OTP 28.5.0.4 and OTP 27.3.4.15, corresponding to ssl from 10.2 before 11.7.4, 11.6.0.4 and 11.2.12.11.
Uncontrolled Recursion (CWE-674) in Elasticsearch can lead to denial of service via a specially crafted search request submitted by a low-privileged authenticated user. A user with read-level index access can submit a request that triggers unbounded recursive processing within the Elasticsearch query evaluation component, causing a fatal error that terminates the affected node. In single-node deployments, this results in complete service outage; in multi-node clusters, it causes repeated node restarts and sustained availability degradation.
