Jamf Threat Labs discovered a cluster of 14 trojanized macOS applications distributed as DMG and PKG files impersonating legitimate software like The Unarchiver, Sketch, and Bartender. These samples are linked to the Contagious Interview campaign, a DPRK-attributed operation using fake job interviews as a pretext. The malware chain begins with unsigned, modified applications containing hidden executables that download staging scripts from infrastructure at 162.0.239[.]85. The attack progresses through multiple stages, ultimately deploying OtterCookie malware, which provides remote access capabilities, credential stealing from browsers and crypto wallets, filesystem scanning, and clipboard monitoring. The delivery method represents an evolution from previous Git hook and VS Code task-based attacks to standalone installer packages requiring manual quarantine attribute removal to execute. This macOS malware campaign uses social engineering via fake CAPTCHA pages to trick users into running malicious AppleScript commands. It deploys a persistent backdoor that leverages EtherHiding by storing command-and-control (C2) addresses in Polygon blockchain smart contracts, complicating detection. The malware maintains persistence through LaunchAgents and delivers multiple payloads including the AMOS stealer, which targets cryptocurrency wallets, browser credentials, and macOS Keychain data, as well as the XMRig cryptominer for ongoing revenue. The campaign employs advanced evasion techniques such as character-ID obfuscation and abuse of legitimate macOS utilities. Blockchain transaction analysis reveals the full history of C2 infrastructure rotation and funding, aiding defenders despite the malware's memory-resident nature. Following Black Hat and DEF CON conferences, a threat actor targeted attendees through X direct messages, posing as CoinDesk's VP and Head of Marketing to establish trust under the pretext of conference planning. The campaign employed a malicious Google Apps Script embedded in a Google Doc that presented ClickFix-style instructions and manual download options. The attack delivered different payloads based on the victim's operating system: macOS users received AMOS infostealer, while Windows users were infected with NetSupport RAT, a Ledger wallet implant, and a TLS-intercepting proxy. A secondary lure masqueraded as a DocSend installer to deliver additional payloads. The operation demonstrated sophisticated social engineering by leveraging trusted platforms and post-conference networking expectations. On August 4, 2026, a sophisticated supply chain attack compromised the keyv npm package maintainer, deploying CHAINDROP, a self-propagating worm that automatically backdoors packages using stolen npm credentials. Over 400 npm packages were infected, affecting more than 1.3 billion monthly downloads. The worm executes via preinstall hooks, deploys across Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms, and harvests credentials from over 300 patterns targeting AI tooling, cloud providers, GitHub tokens, and npm credentials. CHAINDROP uses Ethereum smart contracts for C2 resolution and propagates by publishing trojanized versions of packages the compromised maintainer can access. The payload is heavily obfuscated and contains Dune-themed references consistent with previous Shai-Hulud campaigns. 0 A sophisticated malware campaign targeting macOS users has been discovered, utilizing typosquatted domains impersonating the Homebrew package manager. The attack, dubbed ClickFix, exploits users' trust in command-line installation processes. Victims are tricked into executing malicious curl commands, leading to the deployment of a credential harvester and the Cuckoo Stealer malware. This infostealer establishes persistence through LaunchAgents, bypasses Gatekeeper, and employs encrypted C2 communication. It systematically exfiltrates sensitive data including browser credentials, cryptocurrency wallets, and system information. The campaign's infrastructure spans multiple domains hosted on shared IP addresses, indicating a coordinated and evolving threat. A massive malware campaign dubbed ClawHavoc has been uncovered in the ClawHub marketplace, targeting OpenClaw bots and their users. An AI bot named Alex, working with security researcher Oren Yomtov, discovered 341 malicious skills, including 335 from a single campaign. The malware, identified as Atomic Stealer (AMOS), uses sophisticated techniques to evade detection and steal sensitive data. The attack exploits users' trust in AI assistants, potentially compromising personal and financial information. In response, a new tool called Clawdex has been developed to help bots and users scan for malicious skills before installation. A new variant of the XCSSET malware, designed to infect Xcode projects, has been identified with key changes in browser targeting, clipboard hijacking, and persistence mechanisms. This variant employs sophisticated encryption and obfuscation techniques, uses run-only compiled AppleScripts for stealthy execution, and expands its data exfiltration capabilities to include Firefox browser data. It also adds another persistence mechanism through LaunchDaemon entries. The malware features a submodule for monitoring the clipboard and substituting wallet addresses. The infection chain consists of four stages, with modifications to the boot function and introduction of new modules. Changes include additional checks for Firefox browser, modified logic for Telegram existence check, and new info-stealer modules targeting Firefox data. A phishing campaign targeting macOS users employs a ClickFix technique to deliver the Odyssey Stealer malware. The attack uses a fake CAPTCHA verification page that executes without dropping a binary on the system. When users follow the instructions, they unknowingly execute a malicious AppleScript that collects sensitive data, including crypto wallet information, browser extensions, cookies, saved keychains, usernames, and passwords. The script creates a ZIP archive of the stolen data and exfiltrates it to a command and control server. This sophisticated attack blends phishing and social engineering to bypass traditional detection methods, making it challenging to detect and analyze. Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOS) has received a major update, now including an embedded backdoor for persistent access to victims' Macs. This upgrade allows attackers to maintain control, run remote tasks, and potentially gain full system compromise. The Russia-affiliated AMOS threat group has expanded its capabilities, mimicking North Korean attack strategies. The malware is distributed through fake software websites and spear-phishing campaigns. It uses a trojanized DMG file to bypass Gatekeeper, installs persistence via LaunchDaemon, and communicates with command-and-control servers. The backdoor functionality significantly increases the risk to victims, turning one-time breaches into long-term compromises. AMOS campaigns have already affected over 120 countries, with the potential to access thousands of Mac devices worldwide. A new variant of macOS.ZuRu malware has been discovered, targeting users through a trojanized version of the Termius app. This backdoor, initially noted in 2021, now uses a modified Khepri C2 framework for post-infection operations. The malware is delivered via a .dmg disk image containing a hacked version of Termius.app. It adds two executables to the embedded Termius Helper.app and uses a new method to trojanize legitimate applications. The malware installs persistence via a LaunchDaemon and includes an md5 updater mechanism. The payload obtained from the C2 is a modified Khepri beacon with capabilities for file transfer, system reconnaissance, and command execution. The threat actor continues to target developers and IT professionals, adapting their techniques to evade detection.
